Professor Charles Balch and his delegation—Professor of Surgical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Honorary Vice President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Surgical Oncology—visited Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine Jinshazhou Hospital.


On the afternoon of September 8, 2025, Professor Charles Balch and his delegation—Professor of Surgical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Honorary Vice President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Surgical Oncology—visited Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine Jinshazhou Hospital. They conducted in-depth exchanges on the medical technologies, service philosophy, and management models of specialized cancer hospitals.


Hailed globally as a "Temple of Oncology Medicine", The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has been leading the world in clinical cancer diagnosis and treatment, basic research, and translational medicine since its establishment in 1941. It has repeatedly ranked first among the top cancer research institutions in the United States, and its experience in cancer multidisciplinary collaboration, precision treatment technologies, and scientific research innovation systems is highly recognized by the international medical community. As a core expert of the center, Professor Charles Balch not only boasts profound academic attainments in the field of surgical oncology, but also has held important positions such as former Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of ASCO, and former President of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). Meanwhile, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Surgical Oncology of SSO, enjoying an extremely high academic influence in the international oncology community.


During the visit, Professor Charles Balch toured the hospital’s Cancer Radiotherapy Center, Multidisciplinary Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Imaging Diagnosis Center, and Clinical Research Laboratory in succession. At the Cancer Radiotherapy Center, the hospital’s management provided a detailed briefing on internationally advanced equipment including high-end linear accelerators, as well as the development and clinical application outcomes of precision radiotherapy protocols for diseases such as lung cancer, breast cancer, and skull base tumors. Professor Charles Balch spoke highly of the hospital’s diagnosis and treatment model characterized by "advanced equipment, precise treatment, and standardized procedures". He also expressed great interest in the hospital’s integrated cancer rehabilitation treatment system that incorporates traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) characteristics, and engaged in in-depth discussions with the accompanying experts on details such as treatment protocol design and efficacy evaluation criteria from time to time.


This visit aimed to promote international medical exchanges among MD Anderson Cancer Center, ASCO, and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine Jinshazhou Hospital, and jointly explore new paths for the development of all parties under the current medical context. By sharing hospital management experience and specialized discipline construction achievements, it will drive the joint progress of oncology academic research and clinical practice.
